Cover your tank.

I've kept wrasses before without any issues of them jumping. Well today changed that when I found my exquisite flasher wrasse stiff as a board behind the tank today, I guess I've always been lucky. Cover them tanks up lol.

yeah, one of the many reasons I don't have any fairy wrasses in my tank, all 7 of them kept jumping out even with the tank covered :(

I actually didn't even plan on putting a wrasse in the tank, but it was one of those really good deals from Bobby. I was actually just getting ready to make an eggcrate cover for it tonight when I found him.

I had a nice Flasher W .. with egg crate on the tank. It jumped out during a water change when I had the egg crate off for a few minutes. Found him like 2 days later behind the tank in a bucket.

That stinks....I had that happen to a clownfish once but I was home so tragedy averted.

Question- What types of screen/tops are people using?

I'm using the quarter by quarter inch clear netting and screen kit framing and corner pieces from home depot it fits nice and so far it has saved my fish from jumping a few different times when I was home so I couldn't imagine how many times when I'm not home that it has stopped a suicide attempt mainly the goby is the jumper...

Thanks for the idea. I'm full of stupid questions about this.
Does HD have the netting in some type of kit? or is it a DIY version...I have looked there before but it was a screen window assembly type..

The screen rail is cheap I think I used one rail for each opening on my 90 gallon they sell it in white and dark bronze or black the screen I got from a friend he said he got it a one of the meetings ....I know BRS sells it but honestly I would check with john or chris they might have it there....also don't forget to buy the corner pieces at home depot the frame and corners and screen rope or rubber cost me less then 20 bucks to make two tops for my 90 gallon

Basically you need the ability to cut the window screen frame (hacksaw or something similar). Then you just need the netting you want to use and a spline roller will make your life a lot easier. It doesn't take that long to do once you decide to do it. I need to get out to buy more screen frame so I can finish up the covers for my big tank and the 90.

cool , thx for the info...1 last dumb Q : is the screeing you find at HD or Lowes harmful to the water in anyway? coatings, metal , paint etc? potential for rust? Also what " corner pieces " are you refering to..

They are a sponsor so I believe I'm allowed to link to these - they are also readily available at any hardware store.

You should use 1/4" bird netting - it's plastic so you don' have to worry about any contaminants.

THe bird screen at home depot is not harmful, just too big of hole openings. they are meant to keep birds out, not fish in.

as far as I know the screen frames are painted aluminum and the corner pieces are plastic. The frame should stay out of the water.

There are enough people using them, that I think we would have heard of any adverse effects to the tank.

This definitely might be one of my next projects. Although I really do like the look of black eggcrate vs a screen top.

Yeah you just need to buy the 1/4" bird netting - not sure they carry that in stores. I bought mine on amazon or something. Another positive is it blocks essentially no light if that is a concern.

Not sure if they still have any but the club had a big role of the 1/4" stuff and they were just giving it to us. Might want to ask Postal or Ms Postal to see if there is more. You would have to be a member
