Crab Only Tank

I was thinking about starting a 30-40gallon tank for 4-5 inch crabs. Such as a couple blue crabs. I haven't been able to find anyone who has been trying this. This would house common salt/brackish crabs. Also having an external filter drilled through the back of the aquarium. Any thoughts, or suggestions?

interesting idea. Sometimes i wish i had a large house with endless space and money. i would set up every possible environment i could... i could have my very own mini biome.

The onlything i could see is sand getting into the intake water since its so close to the sand bed.

I have housed them before, and successfully had one for over a year, molting several times, before returning it to the wild due to size. I feel that this tank would allow the crabs to dig, feed, and hide more naturally than if it was a regular aquarium. Also some plants that grow in the salty sand would be a good addition. Does anyone know of small (10 to 18 inch) plants that wouldnt mind salt or sandy/rocky soil?

You can turn ordinary mangrowe plants in to bonsai, they'l fit perfectly. You can force them to grow elaborate and wisually interestin root system by growing them in just water for the forst year. Choose smallest propagules you can find. Sand wont stay like that unless contained in some way, so an iland in a middle made from some sort of a container would work better long term than a pial in a corner. Alternativey, you may choose to containe water insed of sand. You also can simulate the tidal action if anothe water container (sump of a sorts) is included with a pump on a timer. If u have an exess to such an environment, i am sure u can find tons if little bisties to make this an exqisitly interestin terrarium, but, unfortunately, few of these are commercially available. Good luck!
