crabs vs snails

dont crabs kill snails? seriously . i have a mixed reef, can i keep turbos sallylightfoots and hermits together? or should i just go the crab route? for algea purposes.

Your crabs will make your snails a delicious treat. then use their shells!

I have went to all crabs because I got tired of replacing snails every couple months. If you don't have a problem having to restock snails every once in a while, then a good variety of snails/crabs would be good.

I have some mondo zebra legged crabs that start off tiny, now the snails shells are too small for them.

I have good luck with redleg and scarlet hermits leaving my snails alone. I think the blue hermits go after snails a bit more. I have about 16 hermits, 5 nassarius, 7 astrea, and 3 trochus snails together about a year in a 90.

Sally lightfoots are quite unpredictable. From what I've read, I wouldn't put one in my tank. I also find turbos to be much less hardy than trochus or astrea. After 16 months I have 7 of 10 astrea, 3 of 4 trochus, 5 of 5 nassarius, and 0 of 6 turbos.

On the hermit side, of the 25 original redegs I have 12 left after 16 months and have been backfilling with scarletts which I have 4 of 6 the newest of which are about 4 months in the tank.

i don't think any hermits and most crabs could take on a conch which is a type of snail apart from halloween hermits because thats the type of shell they use.
anemone/porcelain crabs won't bother any snails.
squat lobsters might not bother snails.
if you haven't already got stomella snails in your tank try and get a hold of them, they multiply rapidly (not in a pest way) they also don't have a proper shell so would be less tempting for the hermits

Snails & crabs can co exist in the right proportions. Target feeding the crabs can go a long way IMO. They're both bandaids though as far as the algae growth is concerned.

I don't know how some people's crabs kill their snails. My guess is that they don't provide adequate vacant shells for the crabs to move to once they have outgrown their current residence. IME I have never had a crab kill a snail, but that is because at any given time I have at least 10-15 empty shells on the sand bed that they can choose to take up residence in, instead of killing a snail for its shell. Make sure you have various sizes small to medium and medium to large.

As for Sally Lightfoots, I have heard that they can sometimes capture and eat small sleeping fish, and eat polyps off SPS. Never had a SL, so I can't say from experience.
