Crack in tank

I have a question. I know it might seem stupid but I must ask. I am upgrading from my 55 gallon tank to a 75. I wish I could go bigger, but atm the apartment I live in is not big enough. Back to the crack. I bought the reef ready tank and set it up on the stand and put all the plumbing together. Then I filled the tank and my wife noticed there is a crack on the top back where the two pieces of glass come together. It is a half rainbow from the top about an inch going toward the middle. What should I do ?

Unfortunately, I wouldn't trust it and I would replace the tank. You could try taking it to a glass shop and having that pane replaced, however, will probably not be cost effective.

If it were me I would scrap the tank. Why take a chance of it fracturing more and dumping the contents on your floor? A crack in glass will continue until it reaches something that will stop it (edge or hole). Atleast at this stage a switch out would be easier then if it were an established reef. If you really want to fix it Moe (author of Marine Aquariums) suggests putting a piece of glass over the craked area w/ silicone. I have done a similar trick w/ my 10gal. reef that started cracking about 8 months after it was setup. Since I am upgrading to a larger tank shortly, I didn't mind the "band-aid" fix.

could you ever be TOTALLY comfortable knowing there is a crack in it? considerign the pressure exerted within the tank. Even things like temperature fluctuations within the room can aggrivate a crack...i know it stinks, but i'd look for another one, even second hand.....or, consult a local glass company and see if they can replace that one pane and seal it back together while you have your livestock in containers for a few days....although a used tank might be cheaper than that!

Good idea not to use a crack tank or one day you will come home to a massive flood!

I was given a 108 gal hagen tank with a chip in the top corner from the previous ownerfor free. I filled it up in my garage and watch the water pressure in two weeks turn from a chip to a crack running diagonaly across the front pane and eventually started leaking from the crack. The water pressure open the crack larger and would eventually drain the tank.

So a crack tank will eventually lead to a disaster!
