Craigslist score!

So i was browsing craigslist the other day looking for live rock, when i came across a random ad for $300 for a saltwater tank. I actually skipped it and continued to look for a few hours, only to a few hours later hit the ad again.

This time however I read through it entirely and seen what was for sale, i ended up scoring a guys whole reef setup with a 75g reef ready tank, and a 55g custom sump, along with everything needed for $300.

It also included the 70+ lbs of sand, and 30-40 lbs maybe of rock? Also an ro/di filter.

anyway i'll throw some pics up. did i score big time?

the lights are the same cheapo t5ho's i just ordered off ebay, and 3 of the 4 bulbs were out, but i got this one free, so kinda nice.

i also got a huge box of misc hose and random suction cups, and all kinds of little stuff.

wow thats great, i wonder what crashed the tank in the first place, just in case you may wanna clean the heck out of it, but thats a great start XD

The guy actually had a heart attack, it wasn't a hobby related problem that cause him to leave the hobby sadly. His wife was just trying to get rid of the stuff quickly.

I did notice the tank was disturbingly dirty. A lot of algae on the rocks, and in the sand, and some major buildup in the overflow.

I'm going to clean the tank up, and then look into possibly redrilling. Don't know if i like how the overflow is now, bulkheads are in the bottom of the tank in the overflow currently.

not a huge upgrade going from my current 55g --> 75g, but adding the 55g sump will be a huge upgrade.

personally that is where i prefer my plumbing, i like to keep it all underneath whenever possible, but that does make plumbing a bit tighter. My only dislike with it is the tendancy to have a smaller overflow.

Also, water volume from 55-75 isnt a huge difference, but the physical dimensions of the tank will make a world of difference, that extra 6" front to back will be an epiphany for you on the scale of going from a flip phone to a smart phone, you will never understand how you went without it, and you will start yearning for a 24" tank lol

yeah, I can see that. it'll be nice to have more room to move rock around.

I will have to make a new stand to fit the 55g sump though, because it will not fit in the stand that came with the tank. it's already in my basement so i don't have the option of putting it below the floor.

as far as plumbing, maybe i'll do a little more digging about bottom glass bulkheads, would be nice not to change anything, or very little.


now i just have to sort out this ro/di, its a basic unit from a company i dont know, so i need all new filters, and likely a new restrictor because i have no idea what was originally in it.
