Alright thanks everyone, I am looking into an ATO now, I have the stock pump that I switched out on my tank, so maybe using that in a DIY ATO would work. I was not concerned with the look of a cover, as I would just be tossing it on when I go away and removing it when I get back, and it definitely would not have been airtight as I would cut holes in it for the cords and such.
Regardless, ATO seems essential, so back to the store!
