Croakie clam

What's the age of your tank? Everything been stable for a good long while?

I find it's best to take the very very slow and steady approach, but I can't remember how long your tank has been set up. I am a major procrastinator myself, so things never move very quickly in my tank...I think it's one of the reasons for my moderate success.

I guess another issue would be the VHOs, right? I have no idea if clams do well with VHOs or not, but I know someone on here will definitely chime in (I just wanted to draw attention to it). I'm actually quite curious about this myself.

Crocea is a good choice for size though...max of about 6" sounds about right for your tank (and a lot of other people's tanks).

I wouldn't get a small one. I personally won't buy a clam under 3" because I don't like to have to feed them. I prefer over 4".
FWIW, Chris

Clams can do fine with VHO's as long as you keep them close enough to the surface... And IMO Crocea's fair a lot better with less light than do Maximas... However, if you only have 2 VHO's on a 125, I wouldn't bother trying... I don't think I'd have any less than 6 with a good reflector, if I were going to try keeping clams, or even better yet, I'd go with MH's... And as Chris pointed out, you have to feed smaller clams, and that can lead to polluting your tank if you're not an advanced aquarist... (or even if you are!) lol

Croceas require MORE light than maximas, as they are only found down to about 5 m in their native habitat. I wouldn't attempt any T. crocea or maxima w/o MH lighting as they require a lot of PAR. T5s would be borderline, and VHOs would not be adequate for their long-term survival.

Have you checked the Tridacna forum? There should be much more info there on lighting and other requirements.

Dave

Oh well, so much for that... lol ;) Maybe Crocea's are just hardier then??? Cause when I temporarily had to switch from my MH's to VHO's my two Croceas made it where as my 2 maximas did not...

no go with vho

no go with vho

well its been about 6 months now s o i guess thats not exactly a long stable time, plus i do have vhos and there are four 48s so i guess thats outt a the question, how about something else that is brilliantly colored blue?

Aren't dersas the lowest light ones? Not as flashy but cool none the less!

They are lower light light along with Squamosa's and Gigas but they all need more than most low light tolerant things we keep in our tanks. Deresa's are actually one of my favorites but they get too big for most tanks after a few years as I am well aware:rolleyes:

You need me to take that clam off your hands on the 10th? ;) J/k I like the big huge clam in the tank look personally even if they take up lots of real estate.

So do I!!! That and they make good biological filters... :)

I never fed the clam I got from RCS and it was barely 2". Its probably 5 inches now. I have a refugium so maybe it helps. I am not recommending people dont feed their clams, but if you look at the clam forum you will find a lively debate on the subject. If you bowl feed the clam you will add stress. BTW mine is a teal Maxima.

Mike, great to hear it's doing well for you. Send me some pictures!

I don't have any clams at the moment, but am contemplating adding something. Downgraded (downsized?) to a 65g w/50g refugium when I moved.

I think the refugium helps a lot in feeding the clams. I never fed any of the little maximas when I had them and they all showed growth (they ranged from about 1.5-2"). It was a 155g tank with a 20g dedicated refugium on there as well though.

Fraggle Reef has the best prices on clams I've found lately.

I'd second Dave's suggestion. Croceas and maximas wouldn't fare well under your VHO setup. A derasa would be a better bet, but if it does well, you're looking at an 18-20" clam.

i could be wrong but i thing light is more important.i would not try it but i work at the store so it dose not cost me as much but any way. i bought a little maxma about a 1in and i have never feed it any thing other than feeding the tank. i have had it for over 6months now and has grown over a half a in.like 4-5 new scutes. i keep all sps so there is not a lot of nutrients in the water i do feed rotifers i dont know if they eat it or not. my tank is a 25gal and i run a 150w hqi and he is right under it... but now that i have talked about it will die on me just for spite lol
