(Ctenochaetus truncatus)-squaretail bristletooth tang

I am hoping someone can help and give me some more info on this fish. I have asked 2 of the betters LFS in my area and they both seem to be confused. I have showed them the fish on the liveaquaria website (linked below) and they are telling me that this is just a juvenile Kole tang. I have also seen them labeled online as an indian gold ring bristletooth.

Does anyone have one of these fish. Can you tell me more about it.

Does anyone have a picture of an adult?

It is it's own species as far as I know.Beautiful fish.Care is the same as the kole tang,a minimum of 75 gallons.

Yea. I have seen the profile. I was hoping for some pictures and to find out how much others paid for them. After I convinced one of the lfs guys it was different he looked and they are able to get one for around $130 for a small. Live aquaria is selling them for $50 for a small. Thats a big difference in price. Im still unsure that he is talking about the right thing.

Adults look very similar to Kole Tangs, however they have dots throughout their body vs. the Kole that has a dotted face and stripes down the sides.

Yeah, but add in the shipping. Then figure the fact the LFS has to make some profit to pay for the brick and mortar.

This is the only picture I can find of the one I had. Oustanding fish and one of my favorites. The best looking of all the Kole varieties IMO. Got along with everyone with one exception, he hated my Lawnmower blenny and eventually harrased it to death. I got mine from LA as C. truncatus but recall the LFS would label them as Blue Spotted Kole Tang

Why not just buy the one on LA? 85$ with shipping is a lot less than what your LFS is asking, they may not get the correct species and it will most likely take longer for your LFS to get it in. If you order it, it comes straight to you in 24 hours and you can start acclimation and QT right away. Just a thought.

I have one in my tank, gorgeous fish. As said looks like a kole tang but no stripes, dots. Yellow around the eyes. Mine is going on two years in the tank.

I got one!

I got one!

The LFS was wrong on the price. they got one in and it was $70. Here are some pics.
