Hello,

I have a 16g and started with about 16 snails and 12 hermits...Have 2 clown fish now too. I've noticed that 2 of the snails have died in the first couple of weeks. The first time I noticed a small spike in Ammonia and Nitrites, but they quickly went back down to zero.

What's the more likely scenario? They're dying because of something wrong with the tanks parameters, or the hermits are killing them? I noticed after they were dead a few hermits were on top of them. Not sure if they were there because they killed him, or there because they were eating him.

Is it typical to lose parts of your CUC from time to time? Going to test the parameters again tonight, but they've been fine.

12 hermits seems like a crowd in a 16 gallon tank. I would think 5 would be plenty. Its not unusuall to see some snail die off, especially in a new tank, but with that many hermits I would lean towards them as the problem.

12 Hermits in a 16g is an awful lot...I only have 15 in my 55 and that's almost to many. They may be getting hungry and escargot may be the only thing on the menu!

Thanks a lot for the info. That's what the LFS suggested, but as I've read on here a million times, they shouldn't be trusted haha jk.

What's the best way to get back down to a normal amount. Just see if the store will take them back?

I would try that, they may take them back or you might see if a friend in the game needs a boost in the CUC department. Most LFS are pretty amicable to picking up critters that need a new home, as long as they're healthy.
