Curing Live Rock in Living Room...

hey guys,

i was looking to buy marco rocks 25lbs dry rock + 5 lbs live rock seeded to save some money. Problem is...I live in a 1 bedroom apartment. with that said, i have an unused 30g all set up (skimmer, powerhead, etc) in my living room. i was planning on curing the rock there.

question is...how stinky does this process actually get? i have smelled curing live rock before up close and yes it smells. but will the process smell up my living room or even the area around the tank? sounds like it might take 4-6 weeks to cure along with many water changes until i can move the rock into my DT. thanks

i am currently re-curing about 45lbs of rock, mixed ecorox and store bought live, in my living room. i'm using brute containers with covers and it doesn't smell too bad. the first few rounds of water changes can get a little rank but after that it lessens significantly.

I cured my marco in my 75 in my living room (new setup) and I didn't notice a smell. I have seen one post noting that brs stunk to high heaven when curing, but the majority of responses noted that that wasn't their experience with it.

If your extra concerned, I'd consider curing it in the bathroom if there is room. Shut the door and run the fan if it gets bad....

marco dry rock is cured..so there will be no smell from it....so curing 5 lbs with the dry rock will nit make a foul smell in your living room in a thirty gal tank

The marco dry I got was damp not dry, and it definitely needed "some curing", because even if it was cured before they pulled it from water, it had been in water recently enough to have been damp....(Even if it was just "stored outside", I'm really glad I wasn't just throwing it into an already cycled tank) My skimmer pulled WAY more than the pinch of food that was going in daily to cycle....I don't know that that is anyone else's experience, but it was mine..

Mine smelt pretty bad, but not horrible. I did mine in my spare bedroom though. You could always start and if it gets too bad, move it somewhere else if you have that option

I'm going to do some Pukani in my basement family room and hope I can just keep the windows open and live through it. I'm lucky it will be in a room we can avoid for a water change or two.

No no no.. curing live rock stanks!!! I would never put it in my living room. Find the farthest, darkest, place in your home (basement/hopefully its vented) or (garage/heated and vented) and stick this stuff there. If you cure it right It will smell like a dead foul animal died in a sewage pool.

i bought 50 lbs of the brs tonga rock last summer. I even had it in a sealed garbage container and it still stunk up my garage!!!!! god, it was horrible!!!!!!
