Custom Tank Prices

I'm curious if anyone has any feedback in regards to custom tanks/prices. (feel free to move my thread if this topic isn't suitable)

The more I look at the spot where we want to put our tank, the more I think maybe.... just maybe... custom could be the solution. I'm afraid the budget won't allow but I'd like to explore it a bit. Probably thinking around 65 gallon corner location.

That red sea max 260 tank + sump setup is a sweet deal and the dimensions work really well for our spot (pretty well at least) but I just am not sure I want to make the commitment on the red sea. I'm also OK with "building" the accessories over time if I had a tank built, then added the sump, skimmer, etc later.

Check Glass Cages. You can "build" a tank or system on their website and get a price. IMO, tank prices have really shot up over the last several years just like everything else.

Yeah I'm guessing that a bare bones tank will cost double what that complete Red Sea 260 is unfortunately but figured I should at least do the due diligence and find out before I right it off!

well I really like that 65 max 260. I believe it's around 65gallons display + the fuge.
the width is 36" which fits my spot, it's just a little deeper than is idea because it's a corner so there is wasted real estate behind the tank into the corner of the room, which could also collect dust, dropped items, or suicidal tank jumping fish. The height of the tank is taller than my 40g, but just barely short enough that I could reach my arms into reach the bottom, clean the glass etc.

does that give a visual?

this is an old picture of the location. that space behind the tank makes me a little nervous, it's hard to access and I've already had a dottyback pick it as it's final resting spot.

Have you thought about a corner bowfront? TBH, I had a 92 corner bowfront that was an interesting shaped tank BUT, it was a pain to get good light coverage throughout the tank.

So I plugged the RedSea max 260 dimensions into GlassCages custom designer:

Just the tank (Rimless) with center overflow and low iron front glass is $1799

A rough full set up estimate (I added some options for “looks”)

Significantly more than the Red Sea set up but if you want dimensions that fit your existing stand, you can cut significant costs. I also added reinforced seams and some other stuff

I am going to receive my glasscages custom tank next week, roughly same dimensions. If you remove stand and other options you reduce the price (still higher than redsea of course) but I think its totally worth it to have exactly what you are looking for, if you regret it later you are stuck with that tank. And judging from pictures their tanks look amazing (will update it as soon as I have mine) and they are so helpful and responsive!

After receiving the tank I must admit GlassCages does a very good job! Tank looks amazing and very sturdy, Joe and everyone was very helpful and professional with the whole process. If the price is not a big issue, I would always go with custom built tank.

Pictures please. Glad you're happy with the tank. When Glass Cages first started out (original owners) the reviews were mixed. But, since Joe took over, I've heard nothing but good things about their tanks.

Oh yeah of course…its in the other post but i will add them here as well :)

that's the pricing I keep sorta finding. anywhere from $4500-7k. buying used comes with a risk, but here is what I've seen recently from tank breakdowns...

Redsea
260 Max = $1800 with lights, reefmat, etc
325 XL = $2500, with basically everything
425 XL = $1400, everything included (this is the one I bought).

I would prefer to buy new but for now it was hard to turn down that 425xl. I'm sure there is $7k in value there if I were to piece it out and build it from new.

That sounds like an amazing deal! Congratulations :)
