Cutting down a skimmer collection cup?

I am still needing to get a skimmer for my new set up...and the one I really wants is a little two tall for it to fit in the stand...So is it possible to cut down the collection cup so I can make it fit under the stand? Would this pose any problems and how would I go about cutting it? (I want to cut the top down about 2")

I would think that you would have to just watch the collection a bit more, as the volume of the cup will be 2" less....but the collecting part is passive, shouldn't cause any problem. Cutting the acrylic is dicey though, perhaps taking it to a plastics company to do it would be quick and not expensive, IMO.

I asked aquac this very question and they said it was fine. I only wanted to cut off a half inch though. As for "cutting" it, I was thinking I'd just sand it down on a belt sander.
