D50 or D100

Definitely the D50.

Newer model with better AF, less noise, better meter, etc. The only advantage I can think of that the D100 has over the D50 is that it has more of a pro-build (larger, more robust)

Also take a look at D200's as they're being cleared out for dirt cheap brand new at best buy ($599).

How much are we talking here? There are many options much better than both of those listed...but that depends entirely on the price you claim you can get either one for. Also, if these are used, how many shutter clicks on each? (you wouldn't think it but shutters can and do wear out....takes a LOT of clicks but it does happen) How "used" are they? (body condition) How old are the batteries? etc. Things to think about that, if they will need to be replaced soon will alter that price you are paying.

300 each i believe the D50 is the newer of the 2

Most likely as the D100 was discontinued around the same time that the D50 was being released. 300 isn't that good of a price, though, if you're talking body only. You could probably get a D40 or D70 for 300.

Very easily, as I sold my D40 with the two kit lenses for 350.

I wouldn't necessarily consider the D40 to be better than the D50. It lacks an AF motor and bracketing, while the D50 has both.

a d 40 is what i want but i only have the 300 to spend and bothecameras come with lenses

What lenses are you talking about?

If you haven't figured it out, lenses make more of a difference than the camera body. So I suggest finding a D50/D40/D70/D80 in good shape and invest in decent glass. There are some moderately-cheap lenses that will produce better results than most of the kit lenses.

I would do as much research as you can on photography and equipment before you jump into buying. No one can paint a "this camera is better than the other" picture perfectly for you. In a lot of circumstances it comes down to what features you value (which you have no idea on yet as you don't seem to understand what you want).

i know what i want .and i have spent the last few days doing research and there is no right awnser. im not a pro and i dont have any old lenses so i have decided to get a D40 and buy a few good lenses and learn how to make it work then eventually step up to a D90

That's basically what I did. I bought the D40 with two lenses (18-55mm and 55-200mm). I had the D40 for over two years, and last week upgraded to a D90 with two lenses (18-105mm VR, and 70-300mm VR), and sold my D40 on Craigslist. Over the two years of using the D40, I learned a lot about photography, what I like to shoot, how I like to shoot, etc. It was a great learning camera at a great learning price. I'm super excited to start using my D90 once it arrives (still in shipment). I ended getting about 50% of my investment back when I sold the D40. After two years, that's not too bad, in my opinion. Good luck with your purchase!
