i know that base rock over time in a mature tank it becomes alive but what about a big piece of dead coral, something you see in fresh water tanks, its really white. was really white. its about the sice of a football helmet. i put it in the center of my tank cause it creates alot of caves. obvisouly its not gonna become a coral again but will it posses any life, thanks for looking.

possess any life, do you mean currently or after it has been in the tank awhile? If it came from fresh water or dry for an extended period of time...probably not currently. It should become "live" if left in your tank for an extended period of time, on the order of months to a year. As long as it wasn't exposed to any copper or other potentially noxious chemicals previously, you should be just fine, imho.

Dead coral and dead base rock is the same thing.

So yes, it should become covered in life after a while.
