dead under the sand???

Hey, just out of curiosity, have any of you ever had a sea star (or other invert) die while under the sand? How did you find out it was dead and how did you find IT? Just wondering... because I hear a lot of these critters can disappear under the sand bed for long periods of time... but if they die under there, I imagine it would wreak havoc on the water quality... and then I'd worry about how to find the dead critter! Any experience with this anyone?

If your sandbed is deep enough, the death would be processed by the bacteria in the bed. A very short lived ammonia spike may result, but rarely harmful. I've lost many a' snails crabs and a fish or two to my sandbed at different times- I've realized that if you leave your sandbed undisturbed, it will do it's job. Stirring only an inch or two of the sandbed will not disturb the bacteria thus keeping it out of your water column causing that "havoc" that you read about .
