Deep sand bed in sump?

i just started one 3 months ago. I heard it takes a while (like 6 months) time before it starts to develop.....

how deep is your sand bed?

I have a 6" DSB in my fuge in a 10 g tank that is plumbed into my sump. I split the overflow water so some goes into the fuge. The fuge water then flows int the sump.

I'm not sure how much the DSB does. The combo of chaeto and DSB seems to work really well. Undetectable phosphate with a Hanna Checker and Nitrate ranges from 0 to 2.5 depending on feeding. I have a wimpy AquaC Remora skimmer that doesn't produce a lot these days.

Part of my sump is a deep sand bed. Seems to work pretty good for me. Some of the sand has been in my tanks since the late 80s, so its pretty well acclimated.

The bed is about seven inches deep.

I have a 40 breeder with 5" of sand in it as a sump on my 150 with no light. I keep suncorals and mangroves in there and it seems to do really good. Only had it for a year, plan on keeping it on the new tank.
