Dendronephthya feeding

I don't personally keep it but Dendronephthya feeds on phyto. If your going to be keeping this species, I would probably consider culturing your own phyto, its cheap and easy to do.

lol.. is it hard to feed these? Also I culture my own phyto, so can I just take some phyto in my turkey baster and spot feed it?

Ummm............. nope. :rolleye1:

You might want to read up on these, as they're really demanding corals IMO ;)

It is believed that Dendronephthya require a constant water current rich in phytoplankton. They feed almost constantly. This makes it almost impossible to maintain food supply and maintain good parameters at the same time in a closed system.

Dendros are successfully kept by some experts. The only way to become an expert is to ask questions like the one you posted. :) I wonder if there is a book that addresses these corals well. Anyone know?

You might want to tone down the sarcasm just a touch- comes through a little on the mean side online.

My drendo opens up pretty good any time I feed the tank. Also my return is pointed at the coral, I am hoping he's getting some nutrients from the fuge. He also stays open at night time and I feed cyclopeeze in the morning and after the light goes off. I also dose phyto plankton. I'll see if I can succeed.

the fuge is not going to be enough nor is manual dosing of phyto

cyclopleeze may be a bit too large, I've seen mine take in fine FM foods, but not cyclopleeze... you may have one with a larger mouth and if so, lucky you. Make sure you watch to see if the food is actually being ingested and digested. You have to look very closely.

whatever the case - I find that feeding enough means polluting the tank, which then causes the coral to shut down... what will you be using to remove/dilute all the food you add?

hovhanh - wrong coral...

inthesea - At this point I think people would be pleased just to see growth. Don't confuse growth with expansion.

Funny thing is I've read some things here and there that suggest the lifespan is very short, maybe 2 yrs... but I don't know if there is anything to back that up. I am pretty sure some people have kept them alive longer than 2 yrs, plus in the ocean they grow huge.

HI
I think this subject started off as Dendronephthya and now mixed up with Dendrophylia.
the latter is easy to keep as it feeds on mysis and lots of other stuff including cyclopeze even the dried.
My dendronephthya do spot feed with live phyto and dried cyclopeze and frozen plankton which is very small. I am now slowly trying with the aid of Vodka and a TC2560 skimmer to pump more Live phyto into the water column. Yes they do need plenty of current. I personally think they are worth the work as being the best looking coral in the world. When they are out of course
So far so good
Luck
