So i just acquired a 40 gallon tank and my gf and i were going over some possible set-ups we have come up with 3 so far that may work with the space we have. Forgive my sketches its a new app im working with.

I would say go with your first picture but I wouldnt exactly do it that way though. I would tee it off your drain so most of the water goes into your sump and you can have less flow in the fuge. The way I have my 125g set up is I have both of my drains going into my sump in the first chamber, the second chamber I have my skimmer and a pump feeding a 20g long fuge so the water isnt skimmed right before its going into the fuge but it is still filtered by the filter socks, and in the last chamber I have my 2 return pumps for the display tank with the heater and the drain for my fuge in there also so if any pods go into the last chamber, then no pods are skimmed. It works for me since I can control the flow going into the fuge. If you do go the route like I did, just make sure you have enough space for the added water going into the sump since it can overfill and make a mess.

Thanks for your input. I also have the same pics on a facebook reef group. With their help and any help i get here ill do a test run this weekend with dry fitted pvc that way i can move it around and see what works in the space i have. So far its a toss up between #1 and #3 (separate fuge and sump or three displays and communal sump).

I have an inline refugium setup a little bit different from you drawings. DT drains to sump (first section has skimmer), and the second section (also last) of the sump is divided in half, one for return and one for another pump that runs a manifold to feed the 30 gal refugium (along with other stuff). The refugium then drains back into the actual return section. Technically, just one pump could be used for return and the manifold, but I have used 2. I did quite a bit of research when trying to figure out how to do this, and this made the most sense for myself.

Basically, it's pretty close to Titans_Reef setup from the sound of it... my pump for the fuge is in a slightly different spot.

Use diagram 1 but go to sump first with protein skimmer and then to fuge. Keep it simple or it will haunt you later with too much piping and connections.
