Detaching Clams!

Apparently last night my huge green brittle starfish pushed around a few clams. This AM one of the maximas was touching another max... and, of course, he attached!

I'm open to thoughts and advice on how to seperate them...help!

Upon closer inspection, they are attached by a thread. Am I safe to cut it? And how should I cut it?

use a razor blade and cut as far away from the base of the clam as you can.
