detrius in carbon/gfo reactor sponges

I've got BRS dual GFO/carbon reactor. I changed the media for the first time this weekend, and found a surprising amount of "detrius crud" (yep, technical term) in the sponges. Is that normal? I'm probably a little overdue in changing the media, but I was surprised to see all the crap that was collected in there.

I had been wondering why my water quality wasn't up to par lately... I'm sure that's got something to do with it.

Mine does the same thing. You can notice its begining to clog when the flow of return water slows. Thats typicaly when I change my media.
