Diamond Goby

I got a diamond goby today that was close to 4inches in size. He was pretty and doing well after acclimation, but found a cozy spot at the top of my tank inside some GSP. Well you guessed it he waited like 15 minutes for me to walk away and then made a break for it and jumped out of the tank. I quickly caught it and put him quickly back inside the tank.

He seems ok, not gasping and otherwise swimming around....
Think he will be ok?

As long as you get something to stop him from jumping in the future he should be fine. Egg crate will not stop him BTW. I love diamond gobies but they definitely try to jump all the time. Got any pics? Would love to see him!

They certainly are jumpers, and are a fish you must have a top if you are going to keep. Get it eating mysis or other frozen food for piece of mind, unfortunately they can waste away if left only to the sandbed.

if you have a canopy over your tank then i have found that the gutter guard from lowes or home depot works well across the back opening. If that isn't possible or he jumps again try a blue cheek sleeper goby, or a brown bar/dragon goby. They do a good job of cleaning up the sand bed as well but are a little less likely to jump. The only problem with them is that they drop sand from an inch or two above the sand bed.

Do a search for a screen kit, or mesh screen. There are quite a few links to making your own. Will keep lots of fish in for you :)

Well the top of the tank is completely covered now since I put him on lockdown.......but now he is AWOL will they hide under rocks in the sand and not come out till they find their own place in the tank?

Hi Jennifer,
I have had a Diamond Goby for a year. He is the most active fish in my tank. First in a 28g cube. In a day, he could move the entire left side of the tank to the right! As soon as I through food in, he's up there with the clowns and cards feeding. Mine has never tried to jump, but my tank(s) are covered. He's now been moved to a 65g and has sculpted it to his liking.

Now, if he did his header a couple of days ago, he may still be 'recuperating' . I accidentally siphoned my goby up to his pectorals, and almost had to blow him out! He was hiding for a couple of days, just coming out to feed.

Yours should come out again soon, and when he does, he'll entertain you with his antics!

I found him today in my Overflow. I have a small one about 2" long and he is a shoveler he is constantly out and showing off scooping and sifting and carrying on. The big one though I hadn't seen him and now that I scooped him out of the overflow in a net now he's just chilling on the sandbed hanging out, but not sifting.....he may come around I am sure since he survived the "Great Escape" and now the the "JIG IS UP!!"
