How long does it take to get rid of them in a newly (about 1 1/2 Months) established tank?

Normally they will disappear within the first 3-5 months, as long as you're using ro/di water and have adequate filtration. Most likely they'll be gone in about another month to month and a half.

Thanks Matt! I hate the way this stuff looks. My snails are doing a pretty good job though, but not on the sand. I also reduced my photoperiod just in case. I was just wondering if there was anyway to speed up the process

Some people have even recommend lights off for a day.

Lights off would definately help, but once the lights come back on the diatoms will be back. Just maintain water quality and be patient.

I should know the answer to this question, but what causes the Diatom 'outbreak'. I assume its a certain nutrient that causes it, like high PO4 or Nitrates.

My Fighting Conch enjoys adding diatoms to his/her diet whenever they appear.
