Did I clean to much?

I had my two tangs in the 75g reef tank for 2 months without a problem..Then!

I was going away for work so figured I would do a good cleaning...I changed my return line sock with a new one and cleaned the return line sponge...then sucked out all the algae growing on the rocks while doing my normal water change....

Three days later...My yellow eye kole was starting to show spots and wasnt eating as much...I did a fresh water dip on him "9min"...two days after that he passed...8 days after that my Tomini tang passed doing the same thing.

Suggestions?

With the information you posted, I would ask about your water tests. In your cleaning, did you stir up sand alot to cause a nitrate spike?

Did the spots seem to be ICH? If so, I do not believe a FW dip is a good treatment for ICH, you could have better success with hypo salinity for this.

I haven't read up on FW dip times for tangs but 9 minutes seems excessive and just FYI, I have NEVER had a fish live after a FW dip... even after following various procedures online to the letter. Maybe my specimens were too far gone to save and the dip was just too much for them, or the diagnoses were incorrect for the disease. Anyway...

Was the new filter sock and or sponge just rotated from a prior change? or were they brand new? IE. was there a chance that you contaminated your system causing stress?

Do you use RO/DI for your water changes?

Wow, it just hit me after I submitted my reply that this happened to me as well. I had a mimic ebli (sp?) tang. I cleaned my tank up just prior to going away for the weekend and when I returned, I couldn't find him. When I really started looking, I found him attached to the intake of a power head. I remembered that I had stirred up the sand alot during that cleaning. Anyway, he was in the tank maybe a month or so after a thorough quarantine process and seemed very healthy. He was a little guy, so I thought the power head was his certain doom but a friend suggested that he just got sick and died fast and that is just where he ended up. I'll never know. :(

Sorry to hear about your little guy pavelow..I've had some small guys disappear on me as well..

Regarding the FW dip, I just went off the information told to me from my local fish store...So it could be wrong.

The spots did seem to be ich...but sadly because I was going out of town the next day I never made it to doing a water test..stupid me..Both of the fished passed when I wasn't home so the only information I could go off of was from my girlfriend.

I dont recal stirring up much sand..just the normal amount.
The water came from the shop as well.
The sock was new and the sponge was just cleaned off.

I think I'll be investing in a quarantine tank sometime soon...to help prevent this..
