Difference between True Perc locations

What is the difference between true percula locations on Live Aquaria. Do the different locations look different? Thanks jeff

Jeff,

yes there are a few slight variations. The True Percula which is caught from Papua New Guinea carry a deeper orange color and have standard black markings connecting bar 1 and 2. For the True Perc caught from Solomon, their coloration is more of a yellowish shade or orange. This is the main physical differentiation, being that the black markings do not alter between locations.

The biggest difference in my experience is the manorism of the Solomon clowns vs. Papua New Guinea's. The soloman clown is a more active clown and Notorious for jumping/breaching the water. Its really interesting to watch as from what my observations have gathered, them using one of their few defensive tools. I had a pair that everyday would jump into the back of my nano cube filter area untill I designed a fence to prevent it. Although this behavior can be found in other clowns ever so often, the Solomon clowns never fail to entertain with their acrobatics. The perculas from Papua are relaxed with perfect clownfish swimming motions.

Overall I would choose the Papua New Guinea percs, not only for their awesome deep orange color, but their overall clownfish manorisms regarding swimming and anemone care.

If your really interested in finding the best BANG for your buck when buying a True Percula, treat yourself to an ONYX PERCULA.
There is an amazing hobbiest that specializes in providing the best clowns. His site is http://www.rods-reef.com

Call him up and chat with him, very nice guy. Also there is a reefcentral thread exclusivly talking about his clowns with pictures that will have you ordering them first thing in the morning. I'll attach the forum below. If you have any other questions let me know.

Nice little writeup Bones. After reading that I think I have some Solomon clowns. Very interesting how the two differ like that... I didn't even know that haha, so thanks.. I've officially learned something new today :)

i disagree with you bones.

there is too much variation in coloration/behavior when it comes to percs/clowns to make those generatizations.

i have purchased over 20 pairs of clowns from all over the world, including many captive bred clowns, including 8 rodonyx and i do not agree with your generalizations.

Embryo,

I respect you very much and have studied for many of your posts not only on reefcentral, but also rareclownfish.com, and toofishy.
I will be the first to agree with you in saying that my words sounded set in stone. However just as you have purchased, gazed, and studied True Percs, I have as well. And my studying through relationships and purchasing from multiple distributors has led me to my decision. If you note that Jeff questioned the purchase of True Percs from "liveaquaria": Over a year ago I purchased 10 Solomon and from 10 Papua NG. Reason for this was over my college years I passed the hobby along to many friends, and we all became exhusted from trips to LFS that were trashy. I decided to take matters into my own hands for a few months setting up my own funroom. Not only did I purchase the 20 percs but also clean up critters, and liverock. During the 3months before I started trading/selling my friends clowns and misc. other items I clearly had one tank with SOLOMON percs and another with PAPUA NG ones. This is how I came about my conclusions before getting rid of all but a pair of each(which I clearly were cherry picked).

Now I agree that it may have just been that batch, from this handler, which caught them from a certain reef. But I had a amazing opportunity to travel to Papua NG and do a live aboard for a few days(which felt like 10minutes) clearly I did not want to leave. I was amazed by how healthy everything looked, it was beautiful. Many clown species where noted, yet I had an opportunity to spend a good chunk of time with True Percs. It was an amazing feeling to be in there home oppose to the reversed. And my observation that day was just like the batch I recieved, and just like the inital words I posted.

But when it comes down to it i will agree with you and say that they all vary. I am fresh out of college and yet to begin my quest for the ultimate clownfish pair. And I'm sure that as hard as I look, I will contact you sayin " Can I get 2 pair of your jigsaw onyx babies." You have an amazing lineup and I'm catchin up with you so stay on your toes...lol

You may not agree with my generalizations, but its all good because thats what makes this hobby enjoyable. Let me know when that pair of yours starts rockin the aquarium and putting out...haha

Always a good time,

Bones

bones.

you present all good points backed up with good first hand experience. i respect your thoughts even though we might disagree on this premise. i will pay more attention to some of your thoughts based on location. the problem is sometimes im not even sure if the retailer even knows for sure where the clowns come from. at this point, in my opinion, the best LOCATION is illinois/chicago for the ultimate clown :)

anyway i plan to move the rodonyx/jigsaw pair to a larger system soon. so im hoping within the year they get in the mood :) they currently have only been together for 6 months so more time is prob. necessary.

I have a lead on this guy that is holding onto and maybe willing to let go a handful of Percs that look the most like the ORA clown
(you know the one, aka your dream fish). From what I know so far they are wild caught, currently located in North Carolina, and this guy is a good friend of my uncle(the one whos responsible for my introduction to the hobby). My understanding is he purchased a larger order of multiple fish( including T. Percs) from a farm in the clownbelt. When he cut the bags to begin acclimating he got a HUGE suprise. This guy runs a small time deal out of his house, and my uncle was the one who contacted me regarding the new arrivle. My uncle was able to aquire one and the second I get a picture I will get it to you. HE was saying that it was the hardest thing picking out which one he wanted to take home, Its like picking out a puppy...lol I was assured that with the trade of a handful of my new born cleaner shrimp and a lil $ I could pick one up(HE would not give a pair out to my uncle, but I guess ones better than none). I guess hes big into the Hobby aspect and values a trade more than $$, so if you have nething interesting I know u been on the look out for something like this. I'll get back to u ASAP with a picture.

later
