I'm looking at getting a few fighting conchs but there really hard to find. A LFS said they have queen conchs. What's the difference between a queen conch and a fighting conch?
No, conchs are almost purely herbivorous but may scavenge some meat every once and a while. They will never attack or kill anything. People think that they are snail killers because many predatory snails like whelks are often sold as "conchs" really but aren't. Some even have conch in their common name like the "crown conch" that is actually a predatory snail closely related to whelks.
Anyway, queen conchs and fighting conchs eat the same stuff, but queen conchs get really big and aren't suited for most aquariums in the long term. They can get to be over a foot long and weigh over 5 pounds. They will also live up to almost half a century in ideal conditions. They usually get to be around 12 inches when they are about 5 years old and need to eat a ton of algae to remain healthy.
I think that's Strombus (Conomurex) luhuanus, which is a hardy generalist algae eater. They aren't extremely beautiful, but I think that was a good choice.
i have two tiger conchs in my 180 gallon and they do a great job stirring the sand. Mine keep spawning and leaving egg sacks in the sand but i never see any of the eggs hatch
one of mine will burry itself in the sand but still stick out his "nose" and clean what he can reach. all you see is the nose sticking out its kinda cool
