different salt

Hi, I have been using red sea salt for water changes for my reef tank for the last 6 months. (23 gallons with 2 clownfish, blenny, 20lb live rock, 1 soft coral & some inverterbrates) Now that the salt has run out, just wondering if there is any problem switching to aquasalt, which is described as 'a synthetic sea salt formulated with elevated levels of calcium, magnesium and alkalinity.' ?
Should it be introduced slowly, or does the type of salt not matter very much?

Parameters and stability in a tank matter the most. That being said if the new salt parameters are going to be significantly different then your old salt then yes you want to make a gradual change.

Okay, so I checked the parameters on the buckets. These are the ones that both listed, are they much different?:

red sea salt (@salinity of 33.5 ppt)

Ca 410
Mg 1230
Alk/KH 2.8/7.7

aquasalt (at 35%)

Ca 460
Mg 1250
Alk 160ppm (9dkh)

i think you'll be fine in this case. you only have a few fish, one soft coral and no sps yet. just do small frequent water changes instead of one big change using the new salt.

I changed salts 9 months ago. On the 10% weekly WC I did 25%, 50% 75% and 100% switch. Over the 4 week gradual switch I doubt that the fish even noticed.
Good luck.

I have switched salts and did 10% WC 5 times over the course of 2 weeks before I went to my standard 25% WC weekly (nano tank).

Thanks for the advice, I just did a very small change with the new salt and so far so good. I'll keep increasing it gradually.
