Different Sand Types For Jawfish

I have had a lot of different types of jawfish and I believe the ideal is a mix of a little sand, regular crushed coral, and coral rubble. They generally need some rocks shells of mixed sizes to effectively build thier burrows.
Some Pearly / Swordtail and other Jaws tend to be found in sandier areas, but I still have had most success with the mix of the three.

I agree with everything said above and would also add snail and hermit shells. They go a long way with helping reinforce a burrow.
I've always kept them in a mainly crushed coral environment. Smaller sand tends to cave in a lot more and they don't really make burrows under rocks unless the substrate is too shallow and that is their only choice.
Also if they are reluctant to start making a burrow you can put some lengths of 3/4" or 1" PVC in the substrate to get them started. They will then take up residence in it and cover it with suitable substrate.
