i recently got my first SPS coral, a green montipora digitata frag!

at the store, it looked good,i got it home, adn noticed a small patch of brown polyps, only a small part in the back, ok, ill hide that part!

well abotu a month after half of it is brown, it seems to haev happened overnight

it is about 9 inches from my 150 DE 20K MH, in mod-high flow

no calcium supplementation yet, but weekly water changes with reef crystals,

salt-1.026
ALK-10kh
Nitrate-0
nitrite-0
PH-8.4

temp swings from 81.2-78.9 at most

this is very odd!

most of it still has its green color, but the brown is spreading! nad the brown parts are also under the light directly

do corals brown when the zooanthallaxe(sp?) algae densens? i think i heard that somewhere...

what could cause this?

thanks!

oops, just read the thread further down abotu this!

i haev had a diatom bloom the last week, i think a turbo got flipped and died... tomorrows water change day, ill do a nice 5 gallon, then later this week, im moving the tank onto a DIY stand, off my dresser, so ill do another 5 there!

depending on what else you have in your tank weekly water changes with reef crystals is not going to keep your calcium levels in check.

You are going to need to add calcium in some form or fashion if you are keeping LPS or SPS. Some would even argue that you should keep it in check even if you have all softies.

Digis are amazingly resilient, there might be something to do with it being a new addition. Lots of corals do that when they are stressed and have a change in important factors such as lighting condition. What lights did the store have?
