Looking to get a new camera and looking for suggestions. $200-300 price range. I'm no professional. I want it to have video, be able to take decent tank pics as well as other pictures.
Thanks!

Love this camera

Love this camera

I have this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerSh...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1275145139&sr=8-1

It is about the size of a credit card, so is really nice and portable. It takes HD video, incredible pictures, both indoors and outdoors, has complete manual control (if you want to learn more about photography) as well as a cadre of pre-sets (aquarium and underwater being two of them).

I have an 8 GB memory card and an extra battery for mine, and haven't looked back.

Check out the Canon SX20is. It's got some serious zoom for a P&S, true HD video and is right around your price range.

This is an HD video another member took with this camera, pretty neat! :)

I've got this one and just love it!! I haven't had a chance to try out the video yet but I've looked at samples from people on Youtube and its truly amazing! The 20x optical zoom is one of the features that sold me. The clarity is stunning zoomed in that far.

Plus, there is a group that makes "aftermarket" firmware for Canons and I'm hoping the one for the SX20is will be out soon as it should unlock the cameras ability to shoot in RAW.

It's tough to take pictures of corals with a point and click. You really need an slr with a macro lens. I would love to pick up a d5000 with a 100mm macro lens, though the $1100 is too much.

If you are going point and click get something with a good optical zoom and manual modes. Also make sure the camera can white balance enough to offset blue lighting. My sx110 from canon on a tripod is pretty good up to about 10" in, then focusing while under zoom becomes an issue. I'm just learning to play with aperature priority which can take a focused picture if though it looks blurry on the screen

heres another idea, u can look for a used dslr. i sold mine for 300$ with a lens. itd be a great way to get great shots of the tank and other stuff

I also have a sx20is and love it.

20x zoom is insane , you can use the 20x zoom while using the hd video to get some nice macro video.

You can also use the flash while in macro photo mode, Some point and shoots do not allow this.

Also has the option for a larger flash.

I use my camera every day,and rechargeable duracell batteries last for a week or more on a charge.

Thanks for the input guys... I just really don't have the time/interest in learning to use an slr.... maybe it's easy, I dunno. Also, I don't want to carry aound a large body, lenses, etc. This is going to be my everything camera, not just for macro tank shots.
