dinoflagellates taking over my tank

I have been doing some reading, and I think I have a dinoflagellate outbreak in my tank. I have read the Randy Holmes-Farley article on raising Ph for control. I am currently running ROWAphos, and a UV sterilizer. I do plan on reducing my photo period because they seem to be photosynthetic.

Has anyone had to deal with these things, and if so how did you eradicate them?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

are they the things that glow when disturbed? if so why would you want to get rid of that, it is supposedly rare for it to survive in captivity

I had them when my tank was new. I took a drastic approach, which i don't recommend, that eradicated them in less than 24 hours. If you're feeling lucky use one 500mg capsule of arithromician mixed with one cup of tank water right before lights out for the night. Mine were gone very quickly after this I also kept carbon running, which would explain the fact i didn't kill all of the bacteria in the tank, but it did work. YMMV, but it is an option.

There's far more then 1 dinoflagellate :) In fact, zooanthellia is a dino ;)

i had this problem over the past summer. it loves high temp. i increased my flow and lowered the temp. it does the job

I do not have a photo at this time because I spent an hour with a turkey baster sucking them out last night. They are thick and gooey about the consistency of snot. They range from light brown to green in color, and they get a ton of bubbles trapped under them. They cover the sand and all the rock work. However they do not like the shadows. I have about 2500 GPH of flow in 100g some outlets blowing directly on the stuff and it just keeps growing. Temp is currently about 78.

I should have more photos by the weekend at the rate this stuff is growing.

This is some freaky $hit! It sounds like one of those old horror movies gone wrong!

I for one would like to see it as I am ignorant on the subject.
