Dipping Chaeto

I was thinking on dipping Chaeto in some RO water. I would rather kill off potential hitchhikers then save the pod life. It will be repopulated from the display anyway or I could buy pods for cheaper/less time then it would be to treat the tank for baddies.

How long can I dip for?

RO might cause it some harm; not sure how much.

Stick it in a container of saltwater and put it in the fridge for a day. That should kill off most hitchhikers lol.

I wouldn't FW dip it. My FW top off may have kill a bit of my chaeto. Ill second the fridge method.

This is just the info was looking for was going to dip the new chaeto I am getting next week but if the fridge thing is good enough will do that instead.

Do you recomend any kind of quarintine for fuge algea?

Quarantine is always good, not only can algae have unwanted hitchhikers like aiptasia, but can also carry fish diseases.

How are you going to tell if it is carrying fish diseases if you don't expose a fish to it?

in QT it would be fallow with no fish to feed the parisites eventually killing them, problem is ich can be cystic for up to 3 months, could you treat QT algea with paragaurd (my fav) or like prazipro with out killing cheato? (sorry for hijacking thread by the way. I am sure punishment will be swift and painless.

I have been asking the same thing. Couple folks in this forum dip in Coral RX for a few minutes

TBH, I wouldn't bother dipping the chaeto. No way you can replace all the life you kill. You may replace a few species but the diversity will be lost.

If you are getting the chaeto from a fellow reefer, (if possible) do some digging; check their recent posts and threads. Find out if they have been dealing with ich, flatworm, velvet, redbugs etc. before you decide to relieve them of some chaeto.

i dipped my dragon's breath algea in Coral RX + tank water for about 20 minutes to kill a crap load of bristleworm. Worked well and didn't hurt the algea.

Ive dipped my Chaeto in ro/di for about 10 hours, it was pretty cold also after that time, maybe 55F water temp, very little chaeto died everything else did though.

I have dipped chaeto in FW many times and have never had a problem. In fact I once sprayed some chaeto with the sink sprayer to remove some crud from another's tank and it was fine.
