I've been trying to space out my sps frags so that they actually have room to grow. I see so many people cram frags together! What's a realistic spacing? I'm probably about 4-5" between them.
I like 3-4" in smaller tanks and 6-8" in bigger tanks. Reality is they get really huge so even in big tanks eventually they will start running into each other.
My stuff has exploded recently. I had a tiny nub of real RR wolverine. 2 months later it's off the plug and an inch tall. I'm seeing how the sps grow. It's nuts.
You could put 1 frag in a 500 and it would fill it eventually lol
I admittedly have acros pretty close to one another, after reaquascaping my tank I just didn't have the room to give them so I'll deal with things as the acros grow out. It's an inevitability anyways.
The funny thing is with certain species this isn't that far fetched. For instance, take a red planet or an acro with similar or faster growth rate and grow it into a mini colony, make about a dozen or so frags and place them all over to grow them out again. After most of the pieces have grown out again, make more frags to spread out on the rock work and sit back and let it take over from there. If your tank is tall enough it could be pretty cool too, with the green down at the bottom. I would never be able to do this though, I love the color blocking and texture different acros give to a tank.
Look at this compared to the birdnest colony which is likely the size of a football. It is being held back by the brain too otherwise it would be bigger.
