DIY 40/55G stand Question

Hey All,

I'm a new member, been lurking for a couple of weeks admiring all of your set ups! I thought I'd share what I've been working on. I've recently decided to upgrade from my current setup, a 20H softy tank, which I've had up and running for ~3 years. My softies have taken up all the space, and I'd like to have some more room for stuff. I'm moving up to a 40G breeder! The stand could also fit a 55G, which I'm still going back and forth on.

Here's a few pics. The wood cladding is mahogany plywood, with some oil based stain on it. I don't have much wood working experience, but I think it came out all right. I've yet to put on the wood moldings. Also going to build a canopy in the same style, as soon as I decide on lighting.

I have a question for you experts! How do you protect the wood from water absorption and warping? I'm telling myself that some air flow and a light will be sufficient in the cabinet area, where I'm going to keep the sump. The back of the tank is completely open, no wood cladding. Do you guys have any recommendations for water proofing the inside of the stand (cabinet area)?

Your stand looks really nice! Although I do quite a bit of woodworking myself, I took the cheap way out and bought a pre made cabinet on sale at home depot. My advice would be to simply have a fan/ opening to allow for the evaporated water to escape.

Cool! Thanks for the responses. I'll look for epoxy spray paint for the inside of the cabinet area, and throw in a fan for ventilation.

Cheers!
