DIY Carbon Cup

I posted this in the DIY section but I thought I would share it with you guys as well.

I was bored one day so I decided to make myself a carbon cup from one of my old carbon filters from my RO/DI filter.

Pretty simple really, I took one of the ends off pulled out the original carbon cut the case to the length that I wanted it to be, removed the cloth filters from the end and caps glued on a piece of threaded pipe i had laying around so that I could screw it into my return pump.
To fill it I just put in the first sponge add the carbon then the second sponge and top it off with the cap.
I know that the sponges are not ideal and I plan to replace them in the future with some sort of screen.
Any thought on how it will preform or way to make it better?

Carbon actually works better in a lower flow area of the tank I think I read somewhere, but pretty much anything you can do to make sure it doesn't go into the pump should work pretty well. I like the idea, very neat.

Yeah they got on that pretty quick in the DIY section. It really isn't pulling all the water through the filter, there is a built in bypass (pic below) I estimate that there is between 170-212 gph actually going through the carbon. I am checking with some very knowledgeable folks to find out what the optimum flow for carbon is. If anyone here know what that is please let me know.

This is the back side of the carbon cup before I glued the threaded pipe in, the out side ring of holes is where the pump pulls 75-80% of the water from. (estimated)

Well I am scrapping this one. There is just no good way to get the flow low enough for the carbon.
I will keep the new contraption, maybe I will find a new use for it someday.
