I want to use a computer case fan as a simple DIY cooling system:

Does anybody know of a cheap power supply that I can plug straight into the AC outlet? What are the voltages, red=+5V, yellow=+12V, and black=gnd?

One would be sufficient for my tank? It's 30 gallons 36"x12"x16". Is there something I can use to control the speed of the fan, or just on/off? Thanks

Just use an old phone charger or something like it... If you look closely you can see the output i.e. 12vdc 500mA, and then just find a fan than runs of that voltage just mix and match the charger and fan!

Radio shack fans seem to work well. I have used them for years. First as cooling fans for my audio/video equipment and now one for drawing air out of my wine cellar and one in my sump area. The two fans are atleast 12 years old and still going strong!

Wait, on my fan I taped off yellow and put red to the 12 volt power, are you saying thats wrong?

that's correct, you have it right.

sry i was replying to metal man but it didn't show his quote for some reason. i can see how it looked confusing.
