diy chiller

I like it but, how would you change to tubing to a reef safe tubing? Unless, you were to use a smaller OD plastic or vinyl tube inside the copper lines........

would be fun to get one and see how it would work.......
 
I talked to a refrigeration guy about building a diy chiller he said the braided hose you can buy at the hardware store would work on the low side you could just put a coil in the bottom of your sump...haven't tried it yet though
 
My thought was to get a SS coil- the refridgerant runs though it, transferring the cold to the water that it is in contact with. The tank water never comes into contact with the copper pipe.
 
sorry guys, but the metal MUST touch the water or you waste more energy trying to cool the water than you actualy do.

you CAN buy replacement coils out of titanium and DIY one from a minifridge .
 
Are these economical? And for larger tanks, will they bring the temperature down enough AND maintain the lower temperatures?
 
Now, if you don't want to exchange the lines, couldn't you do a sump within a sump scenario to chill the water surrounding your main sump without worrying about cross contamination fron the copper lines. It's like the reverse of putting bottles of ice water in.
 
fwiw, I won't be undertaking this endeavor anytime soon, but might be of interest to someone.
I scored a used 1/5hp chiller on ebay for $66 + shipping.
