DIY Hang-on refugium (pics)

what type of glue did u use

in the nano forum some one did this mod but they made a new crate to fit in the bottom, is this needed to help with proper flow

I just used some aquarium silicone I had kicking around from another project. So far so good...
I know I should be asking in the macro forum, but does anyone have a link handy to some basic chaeto info?

I just used crazy glue. Worked just fine.

murfman, I dont think the 'fuge will produce enough pods to keep up with seahorses unless you went with a much bigger HOB unit.

Bill, I got a pair of torchspawn frags with your name on them. Any chance you can pick them up? ;)

K.

I really need to make it up there. I will check w/ Melissa and see if we can come up in a couple weeks. If so, I'll get them from you and maybe we can go get a pizza and a cold one...or 5.
Take care,
Bill

Thanks fishetcinc, I used your post to mod an AquaClear 70.

Supplies:
AquaClear 70 Power Filter (PetLand)
Tube of Crazy Glue Gel (Wal-mart) Why is it that Crazy Glue will bond instantly to anything but what you are trying to glue!?!?
Swing Arm Desk Lamp (Wal-mart)
Philips 27w Daylight (6500K) Lightbulb (Home Depot)
Chaetomorphia (LFS)

I used part of the bottom grating to make a screen for the space under the bulkhead between the impeller and the resevoir as I was worried that the algae might get into the impeller.

I didn't create a heater compartment.

Here are some pics...

(It's currently on the front of the tank as I am planning to swap out the CC for a DSB and move the tank but ran out of time this weekend.)

can you/ do you still get good mechanical filtration out of it, my 46 bow could use a refuge but my 10 gallon sump takes all the space under the stand. i went to go buy a skimmer and the guy gave me 3 frags and a millennium 3000 filter for free :D and was thinking of doing this mod to it but i want to get good mechanical filtration too.?

if you mod the filter to be a refugium it will no longer function as a mechanical filter. if you are looking for mechanical filtration, i would suggest a filter sock that fits on your sump. marine depot and some select lfs will sell them. they do require intense maintenance as they will fill up with crud very often. they will need to be cleaned out almost daily. i run my tank with no mechanical filtration and i have no issues. mechanical filters on reef tanks tend to be nitrate factories...which you dont want.
check out this link...
filter sock

Would a 55 gallon aquaclear filter box be big enough to hold ghost shrimp? Would it be big enough for the shrimp to reproduce in so I wouldnt have to buy them all the time? Thanks for your help
