Has anyone ever started it with DT's? I read online that it can be done but just wanted to see if anybody has tried.

DT can be used. Why not read the post at the beginning of this Forum on culturing phyto? It gives you all you need to know.

You ask about DTs, it used to be a monoculture of phytoplankton, now it is a mixture. Unfortunately your growing conditions will select for one (at best) of these phyto species, so what you put in is not what you get out.
