DIY PVC Overflow... (pics)

OK I made my PVC overflow yesterday and it seems to work pretty well with no leaks noticed on the test run. My question is what is the point of capping off the air inlet at all?

Does it make more pressure so it flows faster? Is it just to quiet it down?

I haven't noticed alot of noise when I tested it but that might be because I was letting it drain straight into a 5 gallon bucket which was about a 2 foot drop into the bottom. That was all the noise that I heard.

If it will be a noise issue I do have caps and a drill if it is recomended for some reason.

Thanks,

I've been using almost exactly the same design for almost 7 months and have had no problems at all with it. The cap on the air intake is just to keep the noise down.

one other thing, if you change from 1" to 1.25" at the downflow to the sump you'll be a lot less likely to break suction

I agree with hommer. I tried the same design and wasnt happy with it, so I added another small p-trap where your turn down is. Originally it looked just loike yours I mean excactly, I tested it extensivley in the driveway w/ the return pump I am using. My problem was it would not fully restore prime after a power failure , weird , so I tinkered wit the heights and finally added the p-trap. Iam also using a 3/4 x 2 bushing inside the tank as a over flow, and I notched it w/ my router. Let me know how yours works....

COOL!!

COOL!!

Thanks guys! I will bump it up to 1.25" when I place the strainer on it as I have about 6"+ from the water line to work with.

ggk1988- I didn't think it would work either but I saw one in action so I figured I'd give it a shot. I wouldn't have believed it either if I didn't try it out. Once it is primed it flows nicely though!

This is the video I watched that gave me the idea!
