DIY Skimmer Part Search

Hi guys,

I'm DIYing a skimmer and I need to locate a few things for the job. I'd prefer local because shipping will be killer on such small orders of these things. I've found a number of the parts, but here is what I still need.

1 foot of 2 in. clear PVC

16 inches of 6 in. PVC (I found 10 foot sections of this, but they are expensive and I won't have anything to do with the other 8+ feet).

3/4 in. Uniseal

1.25 in. Uniseal

6" rubber PVC cap

Any ideas?

See what I'm building here . There is a parts list at the bottom. You can see on there that if I can save a bit of money on the 6 in. PVC, use a cheaper/readily available cup, and use pieces and parts I already have, I'll be able to get a decent skimmer for $100 or so. I could also talk a few friends into making one on their own and splitting some 6" PVC with me :D

I built a skimmer one time and found acrylic pasta containers work well. You can find them at WalMart, Target, or Bed Bath & Beyond. I found a long one and a short one that "kinda" fit together to make the body and cup. It leaks pretty bad but that's fine as long as it's in the sump.

As far as the 6" pipe, ask at Lowe's if they have a damaged piece somewhere that you can use a piece of. Maybe call a plumbing shop also.

I've got some 2" clear PVC you can have but you're 100+ miles away. Could mail it if you don't find anything else closer or bring it to next meeting at Wayne's if we can make it.

I can look and see if we have a scrap piece of 6" at work. We don't use PVC much but we do have some.

Harry - Good idea on the pasta containers. Those would probably work very nicely for a cup.

Jack - Thanks for offering. I should be at Wayne's meeting as far as I know. Hopefully I can find something locally before then, but I'll figure that out in the next few days. I may still take you up on that offer yet.

Mike - That would be awesome. The cost of the PVC is the biggest expense other than the pump and I also don't want to deal with 8 extra feet of it because we don't really have any storage space.
