Do fish know?

Do fish know when you're taking their picture? I know this sounds dumb but I can just sit here and watch my fish close up. But when I get the camare out and start taking pictures they run and hide in the rocks. I don't use flash so that can't be the issue. So do fish know when you're taking the pics? :lolspin:

I'm sure they sense a difference in your behavior. My fish always seem to know when they are going to get fed and when I'm just passing by.

I cant get a decent pic of my Latz Clown because she starts doing the crazy, aggressive dance when the camera comes out. Yet I could sit there and watch her in the exact same position, minus camera, and she's happy as larry. One time I sat there with the camera so long, waiting for her to stop squirming, and she used her tail to flick sand at me LOL.

i use to have a blueface that would go into a frantic each time i took the camera out. Even with just a cell phone out to take a pic, he would zoom off in a hurry.

I think it may be that they are seeing a non familiar object. Try to put something else in front of the tank they are not used to seeing and see if they behave in the same manor?

Just an Idea

well i can tell you this

my fish dont like cameras, and they seem to know which fish in the tank you want to get a good pic of and thats the one who vanishes until the cameras gone..murphy's law

+2 on this.

If you want to get picts of your shy fish try putting the camera on a tripod and just let the fish get used to the camera for a couple of days.

+3 with the non-familiar object...in addition, my fish never had a neg. reaction to my camera- until I used the flash- now all bets are off, and in order to take tank shots, I use a telephoto lens from across the room...trying to get them use to the flash so I can start using my macro again...

My lionfish and magnificent foxface think i am their food god. So no matter what they never run and hide and love to have their pictures taken as long as they get feed :P. I have the hardest time trying to get a picture of my eel. He moves around a lot and loves to swim between his sleeping cave and viewing rock (he is very active for an eel :P). However, try and take a picture and he tucks himself completely away and all I get is his tail. I think he is afraid I might steal his soul :P

What's funny is I use a camera AND a flash and my fish are totally used to it, I never have any trouble. Of course, since I use it at least once or twice a week, they dont care anymore. I find it really funny that the flash going off doesnt bug them, but it sure doesnt seem to.

Even more than most, I'm right up in the fishy faces. I'm using a macro lens and taking the picture + flash from about a foot away, maybe 6" from the tank. They dont even care anymore.
