hi everyone i just got me a 20g sump that use to be paul whitby's i have a 46g tank i built me a pretzel overflow testing it out right now i have a 20g plastic container draining into the sump with a mj 1200 as a return just testing to see if the overflow really works and it works great but i wanted to know if a mag 7 would be the right pump for the job i built 2 different size overflows so if one is to slow as a drain i can upgrade to the bigger size 1 is 3/4 to 1in and the other is 1 to 1 1/4 any help would be appreciated thanx every body

a mag 7 seems a little big, but it also depends on how many ft. of head you have and how many 90 degree connections there are. that will lower the pumps capacity pretty quick. i always liked to have less flow going through my sump and would use powerheads to increase circulation. if there is too much flow in your sump, it could get noisy, depending on your sump's design.

powerheads are ugly though, some people have had good sucess with a good spraybar on the return line and fewer powerheads.

The pump choice should really depend on the corals you want to keep. It also depends on the amount of outlets. A spraybar, multiple outlets, or just one. There are many ways to cut back flow if the pump you get is too much. The most common, and one of the best, is to tee off the piping back to the sump with a ballvalve. The more open the ball valve is, the less pressure to the return.

For what it's worth, I run a Mag7 and two MJ1200s in my 29g tank. That's 1290 gph! Not including head pressure loss.

hey jet I just set up a sump it has two 3/4 " intakes on the tank they come together to a tee where it turns to 1" all away to the sump ..then my return pump is a mag 3 it has nice flow .. your welcome to take a look . just shoot me a p.m.
