Hi all, my sump is set up in my 130l aqurium is as follows,

protein skimmer and large black sponge in the first compartment.
2kg live rock in the second compartment (i have anohter 12kg of live rock in the aquarium)
I have siporax pellets in the thrid compartment and a piece of filter floss right above it.

im considering removing the filter floss. Seems to be perfectly clean and its been a month since i added my bioload.

Should I take it out? thanks a lot guys

Is it the positioning of your floss? All the overflow water goes over mine first and it is disgusting inside of 3 days. Do you clean or replace the black sponge? Maybe your skimmer and the sponge is beating the floss to the punch.

Any mechanical filter (your sponge or the floss) needs to be cleaned every three days or it will start to increase your nitrates. If the floss isn't needed to keep the siporax pellets in place I would remove it.

I'm assuming you have an all-in-one tank. I have a red sea max 250l. I ended up removing the black sponges and just using filter floss. The sponges were a pain to clean. They just catch all the crap but it doesn't go anywhere until you remove them and rinse them. With the filter floss, I can just swap it out for a clean one every couple days. Easy as pie.
