I think I need more flow in my nano. I'm considering either purchasing a Koralia 1 or 2 or really forking out the dough to purchase a Vortech MP10.
My current set-up is a JBJ 28G Nano Cube. I replaced one of the factory return pumps with a Maxi-Jet 1200 and added a Koralia Nano Powerhead to the display.
Pumps are rated at:
266 GPH for the factory return pump
295 GPH for the MJ1200
240 GPH for the Koralia Nano
Contents include:
- ~35# live rock
- ~10# live sand (1" in front trailing off to none at back)
- Hammer with about 15-20 heads
- Candy Cane frag
- 10-15 Mushrooms
- 3-4 Ricordea Polyps
- Toadstool leather
- 2 branches of Lemnellia
- pair of Ocelaris
- scooter blenny
- ruby striped goby
- sally light foot crab
- emerald crab
- 3 small hermit crabs
- 2 peppermint shrimps
- various snails (nassareus, margharita, astrea)
I do a 10-15% water change every week and seem to have a lot of detrius on the rocks that I have to blast with a turkey baster each time I do the water change. I also have green algae on the rocks, along with coraline. I have 0 nitrates, nitrites and ammonia. I dose to reach a calcium level of 380-400 ppm and alkaline of ~12 dKH.
While I can see the corals sway somewhat in the flow, it looks nothing like I see at Reef Systems and Phishy with their tanks. The corals look healthy and I have had no die off, but I am not getting the growth nor the extension I think i should be seeing
I'd like to add some more corals like some frogspawn, zoas and not sure what else.
I'm thinking of putting the K-Nano towards the back of the tank (currently in front side) and adding another power head on the opposite side. I like the idea of the MP10, since it is small inside the tank. It also allows me to adjust the flow easily and has a great wave action, from what I've been reading.
I'm attaching a picture, but since this picture I have moved the K-Nano more toward the front corner.
Anyway, please give me your thoughts on more flow, how much, vortech vs koralia.
