Do I really need it?

Do I really need RO/DI for A FOWLR set up? Is it one of those "You don't really need it but its nice to have" thing? Right now I use tap and have not had a diatom bloom since I first set this tank a couple of years ago. Is there anything else I have to be concerned with outside of an algae bloom? Advice and experience is appreciated.

Johnagnelo you may not really need a RO/DI unit. It depends on the water in your area. Remember that algae blooms do not kill fish. However you could have low levels of toxins that may be quite harmful. Since you have been using tap water for about a year I think it is probally safe.
