Do-it-Yourself Two-Part

If you find a source I'll split a bag with you (sounds not quite right for some reason). One of the guys in Lakeland was doing it, I can't remember who at the moment but I will shoot him a PM when I figure it out.

Jack, i have enough of the calcium cloride to make a lifetime supply. You are welcome to some if you want it. I just bought a 50lb bag.

i got the dow flake at Pinch-a-penny for $26 50lb. I didn't get the mag flake though. i think i ended up with a couple small bags from the buckeye place he listed in the article. So if you have any of that, i will take some off your hands when i get the sump!

got the baking soda at BJ's for a few bucks.

I have been using all of those products.

I bought DOW & MAG flakes from buckeye field supply online. They sell small portions that will last 4-8 months. I believe it was around $39 shipped for both MAG & DOW.

I also use epsom salt USP half and half with my MAG to keep things in check.

I usually just boost my water change water with the MG & CA and that does a great job. About 150ppm on the MG and 70-100 ppm on the CA.

Would that be as good as using B-Ionic 2 part? Very interested in making this less expensive!

Thats what they say.. same thing, just cheaper..

Sounds good, give me a yell. Got a new baby coming any day, so if i disappear for a few days i'll be back.

For anyone else looking, the calcium part can be found at any swimming pool supply store. The Dow flake or Tetra flake usually comes only in 50lb bags and should cost around $25. That is enough to make way more then you will ever need unless you have a large sps tank lol.

I've been doing it for a year. Pinch a Penny in Oviedo sells Dow Flake. I buy the large bags of baking soda from costco. The magflake is harder to find. I got some from a local reefer, will have to buy some online when that runs out.

After you bake the baking soda, best to take the cookie sheet out in the garage before carefully scooping it up and putting it in a bucket of water. It is very very powdery and tends to easily get airborn after baking since it is so dry. And it stings your nose if you breath it!!! :D
