Do you have any changes or upgrades planned for your reef this year?

Posted this in the URS and thought I'd ask here as well for those that do not visit there as much if at all. So like the title says do you have anything planned for your reef this year? I started my new rockscape yesterday because I need more real estate on the bottom for my ever growing Acan, Fava and Chalice collection. I’m going away from bare bottom and adding a course substrate. Doing that today as a mater of fact. More automation by adding some dosers or maybe a calcium reactor not sure yet. Not reef related but I also want to set up another 40B as a FOWLR for the non reef safe fish I want. And of course adding more corals lol. Oh and maybe a new camera so I can get some decent pics for a change.

non reef related but i plan to start adding more rocks and get more fish this year as i have only had 2 fish all year and havent done to much but this year i want to do so much more i have already add my 3rd fish and hope by the end of the year i have a nice fish world going on lol

Wow 49 views and only 2 people are planning any changes to there tank for the new year? Come on guys and gals it’s time to liven this place up and get some posting going again. Vince (fatrip) you always have something in the works and Jerry (drbronx) any changes in store for your tank or maybe the zoo tank? Maybe get the zoo post going again as well. Adam (Piazzon12) I know when we talked last you said you might be doing some changes this year. Jim (reefscape15) you must have some plans for the new tank? And truebeliever71 you had quite a bit of interesting things going on anything new this year? And Nate (nwrogers) how’s the 65 going? Dave and Carol Pirc? Dave (Neoz)? Mike (J_Bones)? George (bluegobi)? Jim (St.james of reefdom)? LUCKYLATO? xenia2? laxing22?

I don't have any upgrades planned. Now that know what works and I've got everything how I like it, I'd kinda like to go through everything and do it all right.

I've got cords I can't get too, I've got plumbing I can't access, I've got outlets/extension cords/plugs in bad places, I've got REALLY slow drips in a few places, I've got a bulkhead in teh side of my tank that's plugged because I'm not using the closed loop any more, I've got a ATO supply line that occasionally gets bumped outside the tank causing water to leak down into my basement... that kind of stuff.

So basically I want to take my setup and redo it so all the trial and error errors are no longer problematic.

I will probably be taking down or scaling back my 180 this year in the near future, it may get converted to a cichlid system.
I will have fish for sale soon as well as corals .....may just wait till the swap...

I'm in the process of planning/building a wall unit to enclose my whole system....including the water mixing/storage. I have a good picture in my head....now to turn it into reality! lol I currently have a 125 but would like to move up, not sure I can talk the boss into it.

One major project I have coming up is building a sump. And if the sump isn't going to be challenging enough, I have to build a custom stand that will house a sump.

*Note of interest in my research of all this - there is not a 26g bow front stand in exsistence that will house a sump/refugium underneath - not even a lousy 10g :(

Wow that really sucks. Doesn't that qualify for an automatic upgrade lol? Good luck to you keep us updated on your progress.

Any plans on paper Dave. Sound pretty cool.

For now I just have a plan in my head. Wife says I have to build her an entertainment center before I can work on my tank...........doesn't seem fair somehow. LOL

I need to do something. After a long break, I jumped back in too fast and went with a 75 with a standard stand with maybe room for a 10 gal sump (doors on sides with shelf’s in the middle for displaying... ???) I didn’t think I wanted to do a sump in a house I don’t own, but now I want one (water changes suck without one)and now I am stuck. But I have thoughts of buying a house this year and I feel like I should just hold off and go big and right the first time in a new house. Maybe use the 75 for a sump

Ben its tough not to jump right back in after a long break and just put something anything together to get the salt back into the blood. I think it is wise of you to wait for the new house. If that doesn't happen I'm sure you could figure something out for the long run. And yeah water changes do suck without a sump been there done that.

not to derail too much, but why are water changes for you guys different with a sump vs without? I do WC the same way with a sump as I did when I was sumpless.

I think the big difference is where the sump is located. My sump is in the basement next to a sink with running water and a drain. When I plumbed the tank drain I ran it to the sink. All I do is open a valve and the water drains from the tank to the sink drain instead of the sump. My fresh saltwater sits in a 30 gal barrel with a pump to the sump. Turn on the pump and refill the tank. No buckets, no spills in the display room.

I never had an under tank sump so I do not know ehat advantage it has for a water change.

I can just tell you that I always made a big mess when doing them directly into the tank and so much so that my wife would always comment on it. After the sump I very seldom made a mess and she noticed that as well. I know what you are saying but that's just how it was for me a big pain in the butt.

Dave you can't count your setup. We all wish we had that setup . I've seen Daves setup in person and it doesn't get any better or easier then what he has ;). I would love doing water changes with that setup...
