Do you 'pre treat' your wild clowns??

So ive had a tiny baby maroon for 3 days now. At first I thought he had stringy poop, but i havent founs ANY poop since then. tonight I watched the lil sucker.

he swam behind the little power head and the poop went right up into the filter. :p

I havent seen any other sign of disease. eats like a pig, swims around.. doing your general clown stuff...

Ive been lurking around the disease forum and it seems some think ALL clowns should be treated for brook (formalin dip) as soon as you get them, rather you see anything or not...

so do you treat your new clowns for anything before you see signs of them needing it? Ive got 3 weeks 4 days more if he doesent get sick .. then i can see if my meanie female will except him  she better after 4 weeks of me careing for the lil guy

I know that I will be fomalin treating any new clown I get from now on. I will also put them through a 15 minute FW dip after I pull them from QT on their way to the display tank!

did you use baking soda to raise the ph in the bucket of formilin? Im going to have to read up on the whole subject.

I used some expensive buffer stuff that I had. baking soda or cal should work. There is a lot of good info on the other forums here including good buffering and a good homemade 2 part suppliment.

styk.. how much did you keep in the qt water? do you think its ok to do that with a very small fish?

I follow the dosing instructions on the bottle, I have doubled before with no ill effect though. I dont see how it could hurt a smaller fish, but it is always good practice to observe the fish after anything is done to the water. if your clown exhibits any signs of stress you can do a water change to dilute until the chemical is gone.
How is your maroon looking? He's not turning south is he?

styke.. no. actually, i havent seen anymore stringy poop, he eats like a cow, and swims around (cute wiggly swim)

he looks 100% to me. But in the disease forum, its recommended to just do a formilin treatment, because the probability of them having it is so high

I dont want to do it. but i have very little experience.. and I dont want to miss somthing and have him get ill.

I can recognise ick and bacterial infections well now... because i had to deal with them both. but it seems like brook is just breathing heavy.. and then eventully the mucus coat peal... just want to keep him healthy

what do you think?

couldnt hurt, I have never seen a fish act adversly to it. I know more people that will pull a fish and administer a FW bath rather than medicate. I have never had success with this, all my fish freak out and try to leap from the bucket and suffer horribly from the stress it undoubtedly causes them. run the formalin and if anything develops later perhaps some copper will take care of it.
Marcyn II is also an outstanding product.

maracyn 2 rocks. saved my girls life.

Im heading to the lfs today. never hurts to have some in the house either way. but i think im perseuding myself to do it

can you believe, i went to the aquarium SUPER store in my area (really, its huge!) and I started asking questions about prazaquil (for internal parasites) and then for formilin, formalgahide, and the guy was so super clueless. I have a decent relationship with the manager and he came up at check out and asked if I found everything alright.

I asked him.. 'hey do you have any formilin?'
he says 'uh.. no. we dont stock that here'
me.. 'why?? do you have anything else for brook?'
him..' we dont stock it because people dont know what they are doing and they kill there fish'
me...'wont the fish die without it? cant you make a lil printout on what to do?'

I dont think he likes me anymore. and i cant believe im going to actually have to hunt for this.

I did manage to find prazaquil, whitch is supposed to be super hard to get. Its in the form of a gel i can put on food or try to feed him just that...

they still had a few babies (his bros and sisters) left at the store. One had a fungus, 1 had really bad fins, but the bad fin guy was doing mating dances with his tank partner. so cte.
Mom and dad looked really healthy. no signs of anything.

Guess Im going to continue on my hunt for formilin. probley take less time to order it :D

oh. forgot. they had 3 maldives (is that right?) today. they were absolutly beautiful. one had a black heart on his tail fin, with yellow stripe above it and a white on below it. just perfect fish. I want them ALL. ;)

'gripes are amazing fish. I wish I had a tank for every clown species out there and a few extra for cool color morphs.

they had a nigripes at my store today too. I would have bought it bu I doubt I will ever see another one here again and i would want a pair so I bought my misbarred clarkii instead :)
