Do Zoas Really Need Marine Phytoplankton?

Is it worth feeding zoas marine phytoplankton? I hear zoas don't eat it and some people say they eat what eats the plankton.

Anyone have any success with feeding zoas marine phytoplankton?

Do you think its worth it any?

I think zoa's feed more heavily on zooplankton (the animal microorganisms which feed on the phyto plankton)

being photosynthetic, supplemental feedings arn't necessary, however many will exhibit a feeding response when the appropriate foods are introduced in the aquarium.

I've had good luck feeding coral frenzy, microvore by brightwell aquatics, and cyclopeeze.

is it worth a try...

yes, you may experience additional growth
no, you may experience nitrate/phos spikes due to added nutrients in the water.

Corals/zoas are noted to feed primarily at night...use moonlighting after your display lights are off. then broadcast feed the tank

thanks and good advice.

I never fed my zoas and they grew like crazy. Everyone has there opinions. I guess it also depends on what lights you have.

Have you tried fish poop, goldenfiji?
I did just to make sure. They rejected.
Zoas aren't bacteria. :beachbum:

My zoas dont seem to take food while my Palys do. Which seems weird because all zoas are palys but not all palys are zoas

Hummm...
My "zoas" (Zoanthus spp.) do take food. Some of my Zoanthus spp. are actually fast to grab the food particles. Some of the smallest aren't as fast as the palys to close and grab the particles, but they do take food.

I think you're a little confused.
Here are the definitions, as I understand people use them for:

"Zoas" = Zoanthus spp.
"Zoas" = Zoanthids in general.
"Palys" = Palythoa spp. or Protopalythoa spp.

The definition of the terms above are how people normally refer them to.

"Zoas", as Zoanthids, is the general term for Zoanthus spp., Palythoa spp., Protopalythoa spp., etc...
For example: My "zoa" tank.
That would be a tank with all different types od zoanthids.

Another example: My zoa doesn't eat.
That normally would be reffered to a Zoanthus spp.

So you can say that all "palys" (Palythoa spp., etc) are "zoas" (zoanthids), but not all "zoas" (Zoanthus spp.) are "palys" (Palythoa spp., etc).

That would be the opposite of what you've posted.
Hope that helps to understand!:thumbsup:
