Does Baking soda up the ph?

I currently mix my salt with R/O water. I have heard over time that it will reduce my ph levels. Is it a myth or fact that adding a tablespoon of baking soda will raise my ph to 8.0? I also had read that adding it will lower it first an then raise. Can anyone help with this matter?

it wont reduce the levels over time. the salt should raise the ph by itself.

it does help to buffer your topoff water. baking soda will raise the ph of the water. the exact ammount depends on how much water you are dosing. using a homemade or commercial calcium/alk product to buffer your topoff water will help keep the ph more stable.

Actually, baking soda has a pH lowering effect. It will increase the Alkalinity.

Washing soda will increase the pH and Alkalinity.

Here is the reef chemistry calculator. Great tool that allows you to try different additives and see the effect on your water parameters..

I have used baking soda to raise the ph in my freshwater dips but that is it. I would assume you would be able to use it in your tank also. Would be a lot cheaper than the other alternatives.
